Quick answer

We arrange rental cars from Sarajevo airport or your hotel, and quote the full price, the deposit and the insurance cover in writing before you book. To drive yourself you need a valid licence — and, depending on where it was issued, an International Driving Permit. If you would rather not drive mountain roads, the same car can come with a driver.

What you need to rent a car

  • A valid driving licence held for the minimum period the rental company sets. Young drivers often pay a surcharge.
  • An International Driving Permit if your licence country requires it (see the FAQ below).
  • A credit card for the deposit in most cases — the amount is stated in your quote.
  • Your passport at hand-over.

Driving essentials in Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • Traffic drives on the right. Dipped headlights are required day and night.
  • Winter tyres are compulsory in the winter months; carry chains and use them where signs require.
  • The motorway speed limit is 130 km/h; limits on ordinary roads are much lower and checked by police, who can issue fines on the spot.
  • In rural areas stay on paved roads and marked paths — the UK government still warns about landmines left from the 1992–1995 war away from main routes.
  • Driving without third-party insurance is illegal; keep the rental documents in the car.

Full details, including tolls and border crossings, are in our guide to driving in Bosnia.

Questions travellers ask

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Bosnia?

It depends on the country that issued your licence. The UK government, for example, says UK licence holders who rent a car in Bosnia and Herzegovina must also carry a 1968 International Driving Permit. Check your own government's advice, and tell us your licence country so we can confirm what the rental company requires.

Can I rent a car without a credit card?

Rental companies usually hold a deposit on a credit card. Some options exist without one; we tell you the conditions before you book.

Can I drive the rental car to Croatia or Montenegro?

Only with the rental company's permission and the right insurance documents. Tell us your full route so it is included in the quote.

Is driving in Bosnia difficult?

Main roads are mostly two-lane and wind through mountains, so journeys take longer than the distance suggests. In winter you need winter tyres and sometimes chains. Read our driving in Bosnia guide before you go.

Is a car with a driver much more expensive?

It costs more per day, but there is no deposit, no parking to find and no mountain driving. Many families use a driver on long travel days and walk or use taxis in the cities.
