Quick answer
Trebinje is Bosnia and Herzegovina's sunny southern town, about 240 km from Sarajevo (around four and a half hours) but only about 30 km from Dubrovnik. Plane trees shade the walled old town by the Trebišnjica river, the 16th-century Arslanagić bridge crosses the water just outside, and the hills are covered in vineyards.
The Mediterranean side of Bosnia
Trebinje feels different from the rest of the country: warmer, slower and greener, with vineyards on the hills and life lived outdoors under the plane trees. The walled old town by the Trebišnjica is small enough to explore in an hour, leaving time for long lunches and the view from Gračanica at sunset.

Because Dubrovnik is so close, Trebinje is a good last stop before flying home from the Croatian coast, or a calm base for exploring southern Herzegovina.

Arslanagić bridge
An elegant Ottoman stone bridge from the 1570s, moved stone by stone to its present site in the 1970s when a dam raised the river.
-
The old town (Kastel)
Stone walls by the river enclose quiet lanes, a mosque and cafés; just outside, the market square sits under huge plane trees.
-
Hercegovačka Gračanica
A monastery on Crkvina hill above the town, completed in 2000, with the best view over Trebinje and the valley.
-
Tvrdoš monastery and wine
An old Orthodox monastery a few kilometres from the centre, known for its wine cellar; the Trebinje area has several wineries open to visitors.
Practical notes
- Summers are hot and dry; plan walks for the morning and evening.
- Dubrovnik (Croatia) and Herceg Novi (Montenegro) are close — border queues can be long in summer.
- Pair Trebinje with Mostar and the Herzegovina loop rather than a return trip from Sarajevo.
