Quick answer
Blidinje Nature Park is a high karst plateau at about 1,200 m between the Čvrsnica and Vran mountains, around 117 km from Sarajevo and 73 km from Mostar. It is known for its free-roaming horses, the shallow Blidinje lake, medieval tombstones at Dugo Polje and a small ski area in winter.
Open skies over Herzegovina
After the narrow valleys of Herzegovina, Blidinje feels huge: a wide, open plateau ringed by bare mountains, with horses grazing by the road and a lake that grows and shrinks with the seasons. It is one of the quietest places in the country.

In summer it is a cool escape from the heat of Mostar; in winter the slopes at Risovac open for skiing. For more mountain ideas, see Jahorina and Bjelašnica.

The wild horses
Herds of horses graze freely across the plateau — keep your distance, drive slowly and do not feed them.
-
Blidinje lake
A large, shallow lake at the foot of Vran mountain whose size changes with the seasons; a calm place for a walk and photographs.
-
Dugo Polje stećci
A group of medieval tombstones on the plateau, part of the UNESCO listing of stećci shared by Bosnia and Herzegovina and its neighbours.
-
Risovac and Masna Luka
Small mountain settlements with hotels and cottages; Risovac has ski slopes in winter, Masna Luka shady forests in summer.
Practical notes
- There are few shops on the plateau — bring water and snacks.
- Weather changes fast at this altitude; bring a warm layer even in summer.
- Roads are paved but narrow; winter tyres are needed from November.

Are there really wild horses at Blidinje?
Yes — horses roam freely on the plateau and are one of the park's best-known sights. They are not tame; watch them from a distance.
