Quick answer
Jajce is about 150 km from Sarajevo — a long but scenic day trip — or a natural overnight stop on a loop from Mostar back to Sarajevo. The waterfall, the fortress and the old town are a short walk apart; the watermills are a few minutes' drive away.
Bosnia's royal town
Jajce was the last seat of the medieval Bosnian kings before the Ottoman conquest in the 15th century, and its fortress still dominates the town. Below the walls the Pliva river falls straight into the Vrbas — a waterfall you can see from a café table.

A few minutes upstream, the Pliva widens into two lakes. Between them, small wooden watermills sit over the rushing stream, once used by local families to grind grain. In summer the lakes are used for swimming and boating; in autumn the forests turn gold.
Jajce fits into the 7-day highlights as an overnight stop, into the nature and waterfalls itineraries, or into a day trip from Sarajevo with Travnik.

-
Pliva waterfall
The Pliva river drops into the Vrbas right below the old town walls. The viewing platform is at the bottom; the best photographs are from the road bridge above.
-
Jajce fortress
The hilltop fortress of the medieval Bosnian kingdom, whose last capital was Jajce, with views across the rivers.
-
The catacombs
A small underground church carved into the rock beneath the old town.
-
Pliva lakes and the mills
Dozens of small wooden watermills (mlinčići) stand over the stream between the Great and Small Pliva lakes — a short, flat walk for families.
Practical notes
- Several sights charge small entry fees; keep cash in convertible marks.
- The old town is steep; the lakes are flat and good for prams.
- Jajce is a good overnight stop between Mostar and Una National Park.
