Quick answer

Blagaj (about 13 km from Mostar), Počitelj (about 30 km) and Kravica (about 40 km) make an easy one-day loop from Mostar. Go to Kravica early in summer, when the water is warm and the site fills up by midday.

The classic loop from Mostar

A good Herzegovina day starts early. Visit Blagaj first, when the courtyard of the tekke is quiet and the light falls on the cliff. Continue to Kravica before the midday crowds — in summer, bring swimwear — and end at Počitelj in the late afternoon, when the stone glows and the climb is cooler.

This loop is the heart of our Mostar day trip from Sarajevo and of day four in the 7-day highlights package. If you stay in Mostar, a driver for the day means you can swim, eat and stay as long as you like.

  1. Blagaj Tekke

A 16th-century dervish house built at the foot of a 200-metre cliff where the Buna river springs from a cave. It is an active religious site, so visitors dress modestly.

  2. Počitelj

A walled Ottoman-era village on a steep hillside above the Neretva, with the Hajji Alija mosque and a tower to climb for the view.

  3. Kravica waterfall

Travertine falls on the Trebižat river, about 25–28 m high and spread in a wide amphitheatre around a green pool. The site has paths, cafés and a seasonal swimming area.

  4. Trebinje (further south)

A plane-tree-shaded old town and the Arslanagić bridge, about 117 km from Mostar — better as an overnight stop than a detour.

Practical notes

  • Kravica is managed as a visitor site with an entrance fee, seasonal opening hours and swimming rules — check the official Kravica website before you go.
  • Bring swimwear and water shoes in summer; the paths down to the falls are steep in places.
  • Blagaj Tekke is an active religious site: shoulders and knees covered, headscarf for women.
  • Počitelj has steep, uneven steps — not ideal for prams.

Questions travellers ask

Can you swim at Kravica waterfall?

Swimming has been allowed in a marked area in the summer season, but the management sets the rules and they can change. Check the official website or ask us for your dates.

How far is Kravica from Mostar and Sarajevo?

About 40 km (just under an hour) from Mostar and about 165 km (around three hours) from Sarajevo.

When is the best time to see Kravica?

For swimming, June to early September. In spring the falls carry the most water after snowmelt, which is spectacular but too cold for swimming.

Can we see Blagaj, Počitelj and Kravica in one day?

Yes, comfortably from Mostar. From Sarajevo it is possible on a long private day trip.
