Day by day

Day 1 — Sarajevo. Land, check in and walk through Baščaršija in the evening. Keep the first day light.

Day 2 — Sarajevo. The old town in the morning, the Latin Bridge and Vijećnica at midday, and the cable car up Trebević before sunset. Details in our Sarajevo guide.

Day 3 — Neretva valley to Mostar. Leave mid-morning; stop at Konjic's stone bridge and at Jablanica lake and the Neretva bridge memorial. Arrive in Mostar for the sunset at the Old Bridge. Train alternative: about two hours, twice a day at the time of writing — see Sarajevo to Mostar.

Day 4 — Herzegovina loop. Blagaj early, Kravica before noon (swim in summer where allowed), Počitelj in the late afternoon. See the Herzegovina guide.

Day 5 — To Jajce. The longest drive: about 165 km through the mountains past Rama Lake. Arrive in time for the Pliva waterfall in evening light. Jajce guide.

Day 6 — Travnik and back. The watermills on the Pliva lakes, lunch in Travnik by the Plava Voda springs, then about 95 km to Sarajevo.

Day 7 — Departure. If your flight is late, visit the Tunnel of Hope near the airport.

Variations

  • With young children: drop Jajce, add a day at Vrelo Bosne and a mountain day — see our family holiday.
  • Without a car: train to Mostar, a driver for day 4, and a Jajce day trip from Sarajevo.
  • Ten days: continue from Jajce to Una National Park (about 150 km) for two nights, then return to Sarajevo (about 300 km).
  • Winter: swap the waterfalls for Jahorina or Bjelašnica.

Questions travellers ask

Can you do this itinerary without a car?

Partly. Sarajevo–Mostar works well by train or bus, but Blagaj, Počitelj, Kravica and the Pliva lakes are hard to reach by public transport. Use a local driver for those days or join day trips.

Is it better to stay in Sarajevo and do day trips?

It saves packing but adds driving. Mostar and Herzegovina deserve at least one night; Jajce works as a long day trip from Sarajevo.

What should I change in winter?

Replace the Kravica swim with a snow day on Jahorina or Bjelašnica and allow more time on mountain roads. Some sites have shorter hours in winter.
