Quick answer

Sarajevo deserves two to three days: one for the old town and the Austro-Hungarian centre, one for viewpoints and Vrelo Bosne, and one for a day trip or the mountains. The airport is about 9 km from the centre, so it is also the natural first and last stop of most trips.

A city of layers

Sarajevo grew along a narrow valley, so its history lies in a line. Walk west from Baščaršija and you pass from the Ottoman bazaar into the Austro-Hungarian centre in a few minutes, then into the socialist-era blocks and the modern business district. Mosques, a Catholic cathedral, an Orthodox church and the old synagogue stand within a short walk of each other.

How to spend your days

Day one — the old town. Start at the Sebilj in Baščaršija, visit Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and its courtyard, walk along the Miljacka to the Latin Bridge and Vijećnica, then continue down Ferhadija. A licensed guide makes the history come alive — add one to a car with a driver.

Day two — above and around. Take the cable car up Trebević, or drive to the Yellow Fortress for the sunset. Spend the morning at Vrelo Bosne in Ilidža, and stop at the Tunnel of Hope on the way back.

Day three — out of the city. Head to the mountains of Jahorina or Bjelašnica, or take a Mostar day trip.

Eating in Sarajevo

Ćevapi — small grilled meat rolls served in flatbread with onions — are the city's signature dish, followed by burek and other pies, and sweets such as baklava and tufahija. Many traditional grills in the old town serve halal meat and some display a halal certificate; our halal-friendly travel guide explains how to check.

  1. Baščaršija

The old bazaar founded in the 15th century, with the wooden Sebilj fountain, copper workshops and the smell of ćevapi and Bosnian coffee.

  2. Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque

The city's main Ottoman mosque, completed in the early 1530s, with its courtyard fountain and clock tower nearby. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times.

  3. Latin Bridge and Vijećnica

The corner where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in 1914, and the Moorish-revival City Hall, burned in 1992 and reopened in 2014.

  4. Mount Trebević and the cable car

The cable car reopened in 2018 and climbs from the old town to the mountain in a few minutes. Sunset views over the whole valley.

  5. Vrelo Bosne

The source of the Bosna river in Ilidža — springs, streams, wooden bridges and a long tree-lined avenue. A favourite with families.

  6. Tunnel of Hope

The museum at the tunnel dug under the airport runway during the 1992–1995 siege; close to the airport, so easy to combine with a transfer.

Practical notes

  • Getting there: Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) is about 9 km from the centre — see airport transfers.
  • Getting around: the old town is walkable; trams run along the main valley street; taxis are inexpensive.
  • Mosques: dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered; headscarf for women inside).
  • Currency: the convertible mark (KM/BAM), fixed at 1.95583 KM to the euro. Cards work in most hotels and restaurants; keep cash for small shops.
  • Safety: Sarajevo is generally calm for visitors; watch for pickpockets in crowded tourist areas and on trams.
