Quick answer

Banja Luka is the second-largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, about 196 km north-west of Sarajevo — around three and a half hours by road — and about 70 km from Jajce. Tree-lined avenues, the Kastel fortress on the Vrbas river, the rebuilt Ferhadija mosque and rafting in the Vrbas canyon are the main reasons to visit.

The green city on the Vrbas

Banja Luka is a city of parks and wide avenues, built around the Vrbas river. The Kastel fortress sits right on the water, and the rebuilt Ferhadija mosque — reconstructed with stones recovered from the river and the rubble — is one of the most moving restoration stories in the region.

Spend an evening in the pedestrian centre, a morning on the river and lunch over Banja Luka's own style of ćevapi. From here, Jajce is about an hour and a half south.

Practical notes

  • Try Banja Luka ćevapi, served as a joined block of four in bread.
  • Jajce is about an hour and a half away — a natural pairing.
  • Rafting season is roughly April to October, depending on water levels.
