Quick answer
Tuzla, the third-largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is about 118 km north-east of Sarajevo — around two and a half hours by road. It has been built on salt for centuries, and today its best-known sight is the Pannonian lakes: salt-water lakes with beaches right in the city centre, open in summer. Tuzla International Airport also makes it a gateway to the north.
Built on salt
Tuzla's name comes from the Turkish word for salt, and salt has shaped the city for centuries. Salt water pumped from deep underground now fills the Pannonian lakes — beaches and pools in the middle of town, busy with families all summer.

Around them, Freedom Square and the old town make a pleasant evening walk. With an extra half day, drive to Srebrenik, where a medieval castle sits on top of a rock pillar above the forest.
Tuzla is about two and a half hours from Sarajevo; compare all distances in our city-to-city table.
