125 km · about 2–3 hours
Sarajevo to Mostar — train, bus, car or private transfer
Quick answer
Mostar is about 125 km from Sarajevo by road — a little over two hours without stops. The train takes about two hours and runs twice a day each way (at the time of writing); buses are more frequent but slower. A private transfer is the only option that goes door to door and lets you stop along the Neretva.
The options compared
| Option | Time | Comfort with luggage | Stops on the way | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Train | About 2 h | Good | No | Scenery on a budget, light luggage |
| Bus | About 2.5–3 h | Fair | No | Frequent departures |
| Rental car | 2 h 10 min + stops | Good | Yes | Self-drive trips — see car rental |
| Private transfer | 2 h 10 min + stops | Best | Yes | Families, groups, airport arrivals |
Train and bus times change with the season, so check current timetables with the operators. We do not publish their fares because they change; the train and the bus are both inexpensive compared with a private car.
Stops worth making
- Konjic — about 55 km from Sarajevo. An Ottoman stone bridge over the Neretva and a good coffee stop.
- Jablanica — the turquoise lake and the broken railway bridge left as a memorial of the 1943 Battle of the Neretva.
- The Neretva canyon — south of Jablanica the road and railway squeeze between mountains; there are safe lay-bys for photographs.
- Blagaj and Počitelj — just past Mostar; add them on arrival or keep them for a Herzegovina day.
Driving it yourself
The road is the main M17 route: two lanes for most of the way, winding through the canyon and busy in summer. Allow extra time behind trucks and in winter, when snow and ice are possible on the higher sections near Sarajevo. Read driving in Bosnia for the rules.

The line follows the Neretva valley and is one of the most scenic in the region. It runs only a couple of times a day, so check the timetable of the Railways of the Federation of BiH before you plan around it.

Yes — see our Mostar day trip from Sarajevo. It is a full day, so many travellers prefer at least one night in Mostar.
