Where to stay in Sarajevo — the best areas compared

Quick answer

First-time visitors usually stay in or near Baščaršija to walk everywhere. Couples who want quiet nights prefer the centre or a hillside room with a view; families with a car often choose Ilidža, about 10 km west, close to Vrelo Bosne and the airport.

The areas at a glance

Area Best for Pros Cons
Baščaršija / old town First visits, short stays Everything on foot, atmosphere Busy evenings, limited parking, some steep lanes
Centre (Ferhadija, Marijin Dvor) Couples, shopping Quieter, modern hotels, trams Less old-town charm at the door
Hillside neighbourhoods (Bistrik, Vratnik) Views and character Panoramic terraces, traditional houses Steep streets; a car or taxi helps
Ilidža Families with a car, longer stays Space, parks, Vrelo Bosne, near the airport About 10 km from the old town

How to choose

  • Without a car, stay within walking distance of the tram line or the old town.
  • With small children, look for a ground-floor apartment or a hotel with a lift — many old-town buildings have none.
  • For a view, ask for a hillside room facing the valley — but check the walk up.
  • For Friday prayers at Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, stay within walking distance of Baščaršija.
  • In winter, the centre is easier than the hillsides when streets are icy.

Getting from the airport

Sarajevo International Airport is about 9 km from the old town and about 3 km from Ilidža. A pre-booked airport transfer takes you straight to the door, which matters in the old town, where some streets are pedestrian only.
